Since the financial crisis, it has been impossible for firms that are active in real estate finance markets to ignore regulation (even if many on the lending side can ignore tax most of the time). This committee has long been a useful forum for information exchange and mutual updates regarding regulatory (and tax) developments affecting some part or other of our market.
The terms of reference for the committee since 2017 were that it should seek to:
- monitor, discuss and, where appropriate, respond to current financial regulatory and tax developments
- inform the wider CREFC Europe membership about relevant financial regulatory and tax developments
- build relationships of trust with policymakers and regulators so they increasingly recognise that CREFC Europe is the place to go for informed and thoughtful input and advice. Improving CREFC Europe’s ability to inform the policymaking process more effectively will in turn help policymakers and regulators achieve their aims with lower risks of unintended consequences in a sector of which their understanding is all too often limited.
We are currently reappraising the best way for the committee to operate following the retirement at the end of 2021 of Clive Bull (Deutsche Bank), its long-standing chair.
